Hello All,
Well on Sunday the clouds in NY finally decided to lay off on the rain. It did spit a little here and there but nothing crazy while I was out for a short hunt. I went to one of my old sites with the home dating to 1768. This site has seen many detect it and the signals are iffy at best most of the time now at least the good stuff is. After digging about 5 holes of deep iron, I got my first good find of the day. It ended up being some kind of horn attachment thing. I have no idea so if anyone knows that would be great, I will probably post it on the What's It Forum looking for info on it. After some more junk digging I got a decent signal which ended up be a flat button with a really nice stand up shank on it. I could see some writing on the back of it, but it would have to wait for a home cleaning. I do love digging flat buttons especially when they have back marks on them. Of course being marked on the front is sweet, but beggars can't be choosy . I got a nice pewter spoon handle after that button. Then dug a little more junk and got a decent signal which ended up being the 1882 Indian Head. Of course I cleaned it up at home and if all my Indians turned out like this one I would be one happy camper . It was getting dark so I went in a patch of woods not far from the field I call the 1700's field do to the amount of 1700 coins that have come out of it. Anyways I didn't have lots of time and swung some in there and got another decent low signal which I dug and ended up being the very early flat button with a nice shank on it. So more time is needed in that patch of woods for sure.
Well when I got home I decided I would clean up the nice button with the back mark last. To me it is like having another hunt finding out what the button says. Anyways after cleaning it I saw Wellington come to light. I also saw the words Treble Gilt. So I am thinking Wellington is a button manufacture and went to the websites that I have bookmarked for button marks. Low and behold no Wellington at all in any of sites. I figured let me search Wellington button back mark and of course then I came up with what it was. It was suppose to honor the Duke of Wellingtons victory in the Battle of Waterloo. It dates from the early 1800's from what I see. There was of course different ones made, but in all my searching I have not found one with a back mark like mine. It could mean that it is so common that no one really post them, or it could mean there are not many of them. I don't know the answer to that, and if anyone does that would be great to hear. Well over all not quantity kind of hunt, but not bad quality. Well if you actually read this far thanks for reading and looking at my post.
