I lost my first post so this is going to be a short version. Stoney and Burdie are searching a dugout about 1850?s to 1880?s. If you are not sure what it is here is a website.
http://www.nebraskahistory.org/publish/publicat/timeline/dugout_construction.htm
The first two pictures is showing the route too the dugout. The tree is the destination.
The next pict is view from the front of the dugout looking into the valley. The rest of the pictures are finds on top of the ground. I hope we can figure out the history of this place.
The pictures will be posted on two posts

I will be taking more pictures tomarrow. Not much left after 120 years of erosion. Here is the only picture I have at this time. I know you can't tell but it is about 5 ft. deep and 10 ft. dug into the hill.

Only info I can offer is winchester repeater probably 1890's. At least made before 1901.

Am I mistaken or is that the base of a 10 ga. shotgun shell?

Guys, remember too that out here on the prarie that trees weren't all that prevalent and that ingenuity was used to make the most of whatever resources were available. If the pioneers were fortunate or had some extra money available, they got their hand on some precious window panes and installed them with care, otherwise it was just a simple underground home. My grandmother was raised in one during her early years. It was just temporary till my great-grandfather could build something a little more substantial. The one good thing was it was easy to add more room as the family expanded. The modern woman wouldn't care for them as the floors always had that ground in dirt that was hard to clean. ;D

Wait a minute...am I missing something here? ??? Are you implying that you two drove alllll the way out there.....and didn't get the detectors out of the car?

Well...neat finds! Love the pictures and waiting on the rest of the story! ;)

Good luck tomorrow!

Nana ;)

Burdy,

Looks like a great site to hunt...out in the middle of nowhere. Someone lived there once upon a time.

Good luck & Happy Hunting :)
