As most of you know, coin collecting dovetails nicely with the MD'ing hobby. In my quest to find obsolete coins, I had an idea of what to do with some of the clad I dig up..I decided to do the next best thing and cash them in to purchase old coins for my collection.

I started looking for bargains at local coin dealers and bought this MS-60 Morgan in exchange for $15 in clad.

I also bought a Barber set (Halves, quarters and dimes), a few Flying Eagle cents and 2 really nice Peace dollars, all with clad I dug up. These were nice to add to my collection until I find the real thing.

Then, since I'm a musician, I used the rest to buy this

If you pile up the loose change you find, you can always put it toward some kind of reward for yourself after all that work, telling people you purchased it with the money you "made" treasure hunting.

Dang Nat, just how much clad did you scrape up !!!? That banjo was a major mint all by itself !

Since 1995, I dug up an estimated $700 in clad..more than 1300 coins were quarters.

Nat....great job..using your clad for something worthwhile is as good as finding it. Don;t forget about all that scrap brass and copper you dig up as well...scrap prices are up high right now and a little bit can get some nice coins...good luck!!!

Good strategy! While I've committed my clad to something else, I trade excess Mercuries and silver Roosevelts for coins I don't have.

Nat, where are you finding all those quarters???

I find most of my quarters at athletic fields (where there's lots of little league games..a concession stand is always a plus) and churches that have soccer fields. They seem to be all over the place at these sites.

Heck of a nice strategy Nat.

I like the banjo! I have the Morgan Monroe, Rocky Top Series.... ;D

Thank you everyone for the replies. Night Stalker, mine is a Washburn..even if I would have saved up all the clad at once, I don't think I could have bought one like yours! That's a fine instrument.

Happy huntin' (& pickin'!)

Nat

I like your thinking, Nat. That's a great way to pick up some collectable coins. Good idea.

Right on Natman,
I do the same thing. I bought this safe this year and last year this nice silver coin
(not cheap because it's in awesome condition). That why I keep all my scrap brass, copper, lead, toys, knives etc. Sell it to the recycler or at a garage sale and convert it to "found $$" I love this hobby! 8)
