I try to get down to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia to dig Civil War relics once or twice a year. I usually head down there when I am snowed in up here in western Pennsylvania
. This year I got in touch with my buddy George Sempeles to let him know we were coming down. George and I have been comparing notes at DIV hunts for a several years now and talking about getting together for a hunt some day. After a couple phone calls plans were made for my buddy Tom and I to meet George on Saturday. Saturday turned out to be a perfect day for relic hunting. We decided to try and get permission on a small Confederate camp that George had hunted many years ago. After some smooth talking by George, permission was granted and we were in the woods. We spent 4 to 5 hours hunting the camp finding what others had missed over the years. We dug nice variety of Confederate bullets including .58 and .54 caliber Gardners, Richmond Lab Sharps, a Georgia Teat that George dug, and a Picket (or Cosmopoliton) that Tom dug, along with some captured Yankee ammo the Rebs lost. George also dug a beautiful eagle A, a silver tipped mechanical pencil, and a nice 1867 Shield Nickel. Even though we didn't get any CS buttons, it was a fun hunt on a beautiful day.
I didn't get a group shot of everyone's finds, but I did get a pic of George's button. The pic doesn't do it justice though. It has about 90% gilt on it.
