dug on civil war camp...part of horse attire??

Found it on a civil war camp ground I detected for the first time ever. About 8 inches deep, looks VERY old. Someone please tell me what it is??!

Do you know when they made these pieces? Is this civil war era or newer? It looked to have been in the ground for a LONG time!

But by the other side of the same token.... these bits have been around a very long time too.

So do you think the bit is from civil war times? Or could it actually be newer? How can you tell, is there some kind of writing you can look at? Was it only worn on civil war horses? Sorry for so many questions, I'm going back tomorrow and want to know if its worth hitting this field and if I should expect civil war type artifacts to come up?!

the bits were as common then as now........then, probably would have been hammer forged but now ahould show casting lines......not sure thoughabout that, but am sure about their extended manufacture,,,,,,gldhnntr
