Dug in LaGrange Tn, Civil War?

Dug this in January of 1990 (the last time I was really active in MD'ing. I am getting back into it and was looking over some old finds. I found this with some large caliber "drops" and the part of an old oil lamp that holds the wick. The item in question appears to be hinged, and has teeth. It looks like it was to cinch up a strap or something. It was dug in La Grange Tn.

I think you're right about it being a strap holder.

I can picture it on an old uniform, maybe to hold a gun or cantene, etc.
