In the late 1970's I found a previously undiscovered confederate artillery position near Brandy Station VA. I dug this button where a gun was posted. We could tell that by the dropped artillery primers. The button is 2 piece, 3/4" and more domed than US military buttons. There looks like there was a backmark but I have never been able to make it out. I believe it is European because of it's construction and the design on the face. Anyone have any idea what this bad boy is? Just for the record the only modern items dug at this site were a few shotgun shells.

Without a backmark, its pure guess work. Looks typically British & Civilian, could be slightly earlier than CW.

Thanks Crusader. I kind of figured it was British but thought it might be might be military. If it is civilian that would explain why no one I showed it too had ever seen one as they mostly deal with military buttons.
Thanks again :icon_thumleft:

Could it be 1812 military? Some I have seen were 'flowered.' Breezie

I'm sure it's later than 1812 By the way it's made I'm pretty sure it's mid 1800's and very sure it's European and I lean toward British. I always thought it was military because the the design but really have no idea. I've taken it to relic shows and to relic shops ans shown it to other diggers and no one could ID it. So I guess I have to go with Crusader on this one unless someone can come up with a 100% positive ID.

I'm positive its not Military & mid-1800 fits with other similar designs.
