Dug another 1600's hammered Spanish coin at an early colonial site

I spent 4 hours or so on Saturday detecting an early colonial site that I found a couple of weeks ago. Last time I was there I dug a small hammered copper coin that I couldn't identify and gwdigger was right on the spot with a positive ID on the coin. Turned out to be a Spanish Valencia Philip IV minted from 1621-1665. I didn't really expect to find another one but I was within 15 feet of where I dug the first coin and had a mid 60's nice tone on my T2SE. A lot of times these turn out to be .22 cal lead but when I dug up a shovel full of dirt I fished out another corroded piece of copper that without having dug one like it before would probably tossed it in the scrap metal pile. Turned out to be another Valencia Philip IV coin and in a little better condition than the first one. The last picture is an better example the same coin.

I suspect that this site has been detected pretty hard over the years because there are very few good targets around the two cellar holes. I managed to eek out a heavy tombac button, a small brass with glass insert button, a nice thimble, and a handful of rose head hand forged nails. If I knew anything about locating and digging trash pits this might be a good site for it.

Wow - you're really onto a great, early site Ken as proven by all those rose head nails. And congrats on your 2nd hammered copper, and hopefully a nice fat silver one will be next. But don't be discouraged by the lack of targets. Almost every site I hunt has been hit before, but if you're patient and dig anything questionable you have a good chance to find those great relics and coins left behind by others. I think I sent you some of my articles about finding and digging colonial trash pits. Maybe you should go back and relook at those again and give it a try. But first you need a good probe. If you have any questions feel free to contact me as always. Good luck at that site ..... Bill

Awesome finds, congrats ! Maybe you can hook up with someone in your area that has experience in trash pit digging kind of show you how it's done. Awesome site!

Wow, great job man! It's great to see you digging the iron too.

Sure beats a crusty KG II any day. Great find I also like the thimble, it's in fantastic shape.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Too bad copper doesn't hold up better over the years. Still glad to find them and still be able to identify them.

Bill, I do still have your articles on digging trash pits. I'll read them again and see what I can learn and maybe try at this site.

KILLER find! Dig those trash pits!

That is amazing. That site has some really old stuff! I can't wait to see you post the Silver Cob you're bound to find there! Did every iffy signal you can, my hammered silver rang in as aluminum can slaw...

Congratulations Ken, that site has been good to you so far. Hopefully there is much more to come.

Thanks Reed, yes it has been good to me. I never expected to find 1600's coins although there was activity in the area as early as the 1680's. Hopefully I can have some more luck there.
