Hunted an area with a lot of Civil War activity this morning and dug this. At first I thought I dug a large cent, but then realized it was something else. After tooth picking it a bit when I got home, I could see it was a Smith Murphy & Company Philadelphia trade token. I researched it online and found out they were in business from 1845 to 1857. Turned out to be a good day. [emoji16]

Interesting history surrounds your token: [FONT=&quot]Smith & Murphy was in business from 1845 but went under during the Panic of 1857 after the ship, Central America, sank in a hurricane and banks collapsed when the gold shipment was lost.

Awesome token recovery.:occasion14:

That is certainly a rare find .I don't know anything about it in particular but I would think there was not a lot of them to start with. Great find congrats !! I would do some more looking in that area . MAYBE you found the only one lost in the area or maybe there are several more there.

Cool find : ) That eagle was probably exciting to see, old tokens are always neat.

Great token and it came out really nicely after the cleaning! Congrats.. and that additional info from Don is some pretty neat history! Now hear me out on this: If you have a few thousand bucks to throw around you could buy a coin from that shipwreck to display next to it! It would be amazing trust me! Thanks for sharing a cool find!
