Last weeks hunt netted me 2 LC's, my first 1/2 cent , and 2 IH's..........ALL SHOT!!!! Got a nice pocket spill on Saturday so went out to a well pounded site on Sunday. Came up with a Draped Bust LC, and this "Mystery" coin. You can see it says "1750". It appears to be copper, but is very thick and heavy. Just brushed the residual dirt off. Looks like a French coin from design. I'm sure my good friend Iron Patch will tell me what this lil' bugger is! Would like to know best way to bring out detail as it may be pitted. Don't wanna wreck detail on it with my normal cleaning method.

Im think French to, Nice finds

I'm thinking it's an early coin weight.

Sure it's a coin and not a lead seal?
Definitely not lead. I think it's copper. When I brushed away the dirt with a Q tip and heated distilled water, I could see that the metal was red and "pithy", for lack of a better word. Kind of strange. Design looks French. It is extremely thick. How can I get more detail out? The design is raised, along with the date. I DUNNO??? Looking for input. This "coin" was found in the collapsed walls of a cellar hole. Buried in the rocks of the side wall.

You locked me in :) But I changed my post.

No one said lead for a coin weight, the weight I have is a brass/copper one. Regardless a neat find and hope positive ID comes forth.

I messed him up a little changing my post.

Everything about it says coin weight. Could be early French, but the Brits. also used the Fleur De lys a lot.

WOW!!! Awesome site! It looks like these were made for gold coins. (mostly). And from what I see, they also coincided with the design on the coin, but not all. Would you guys think that the "1750" is the date on the Regal coin? Or is it weight or the date this particular weight was made or used???
