Smithtown NY
Detector(s) used
XP, Whites, Garrett,
Lesche, T-Rex, RTG.
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Just under the diameter of a quarter.
Very thin and worn.
To the left of G or C is either a H or R. Can't get it to show with pic. Also above the visual letter is what appears to be a crown. Again can't get it to show with pics.
Back looks barren.
It's plated.
I was thinking either in Inlay or Token but figured maybe someone seen it before.
The area has been busy since 1700's.

A crown above two letters suggests a British Army "Named Regiment" button (such as the Coldstream Guards and the Bedfordshire Militia). Since you can see what's on your button better than we can, I suggest you search through the (many) photos of identified antique British Army buttons here:

I'll have to try to hook up microscope to new PC. It takes better pics. The phone just won't show the shadows. I tried wet, angles, lighting, what a pain.

The Britt's have quite a mass of buttons. Seeing unidentified listed shows just how many variations were made. Thanks for the link.

Wish I had an idea other than these guys have suggested but I do believe you are in the period.

Thanks for that:icon_thumright:
After looking at the referred button I can believe it's a button. Not used to seeing zero trace of a shank.
