Just found what is left of an old gun wedged under a rock in a creek. The place where I found it is right beside the remaibs of what was a bridge a long time ago and prior to that it was utilized as a ford.

It is rusted to the point that some of it crumbled when I removed it. I have some of the barrel and a litle bit of the part the stock attached to. Oddly both barrels have a rod and spring protruding from the rear ends; this was not a shotgun.

Any ideas about what type of gun and/or the approximate age? Thanks

Just a thought might have been a B.B. gun the spring fed BB's .I remember my brother had one that looked like an over and under shotgun.

Could have been a sawed off double barrel shotgun that was used for something no good and chucked over the bridge. I have found many of the guns I got MDing near bridges.

My first gun I ever found was on the banks of the Lano river in Junction Texas many years ago. It is a Sharps 4-Barrel Derringer, or also known as a pepperbox. It was in a small leather bag. Did not take much to get it cleaned up and working. Still had a gun shop make sure it was good to work though just in case I ever wanted to fire it. They checked it out and said it was good to go and offered me 600 bucks for it, that was back in the 80's though.

Yours would be a hard one to tell the age on. Chances are it was stolen and then cut off to do something dirty before they chucked it. Even if you tried you best to clean it the solder would eat away and the barrel would separate.

Unfortunately it was literally crumbling apart so I had to trash it. Still curious about what it was-the springs don't make sense.

Double barrel shotguns have a firing pin and spring in each side of the receiver, one for each barrel.

Makes sense. But they are less than 12 inches from the end of the barrels. Still baffled.
