Posted this find in the whats it section without pics. Camera is back up and running so here it is. My buddy found it, I dug it and he told me to keep it. I think I might stick it on ebay. Gonna give him half if it brings something...which someone said it might. They said 2-4 benjamins in mint on ebay and a 20 spot I think he said dug but this one doesn't quite look dug so lets see what you all think. I will see if I can find a link to the post...

The thing is just larger than an IH. I used O.O. and a soft toothbrush to get the dirt off but I only took enough off to ID it. Didn't want to mar it.

I love finding those early 19th century flat buttons. Due to their lower conductivity I can always count on finding them in areas that have been "hunted out". People hunting in "coin" mode often pass them up!

Nice find! WTG!

I think that is what is going on with this site too. We have dug close to 25-30 one piece buttons here. It used to be a mill that I have been told has "most likely" been cleaned out because there has been public access for years. I don't think people were "missing" the buttons though. I think they were ignoring them. At this site they seem to ring up similar to the 100s of rifle and shot gun shells lying around. My thought is that people went through and dug all the coins leaving the buttons because they were discriminating out the bullet shells by ear.

They probably Missed some Nickels then also.
And maby some Gold.

That button is a definate Indicator
of some good things there.

We are hoping. It's privately owned land open to the public (a hiking trail) with posted rules. It was a grist mill late 1600s converted to a textile mill mid 1800s and closed down in the 1930s. We go back every so often waiting to see a sign hanging that says "No metal detecting". We've had some people look at us funny and others genuinely interested and well wishing. Hopefully the ones that look at us funny don't go to the property owners. We've had very few coins. I think an indian, a wheat, one seated dime, and a couple of V nickels and no large cents. I just don't get it. It sure gives up those early 1800s one piece buttons but no coins from the same era. I'm sure its a matter of time before we find a sweetspot with a couple of large cents or a silver dollar. Even if someone has "picked it clean".
