While detecting in Huntington Beach, CA I found a VERY rusty door hinge. It is extremely heavy iron and has square headed screws that appear to be hand-threaded. It has two solid white parts attached to the tops of the hinge. I'm 90% confident that this came from either the door of an old ship or perhaps from a chest or trunk.

I have some problems with my camera but will get a pic up as soon as I can. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas on what exactly this could be, what to look for to better id it, and how rare something like this is based on the description above?

Until you can post a picture of what you found . . . we're only speculating here. :dontknow:

Sorry :-\

A rusty old iron hinge? .... its probably not rare at all and worth little if anything. Looking forward to the pics. Everything has historic value.

A picture is certainly best but you could try a google search of "antique gate hinges" (substitute gate for door or chest) and look for a match.

Here are the pictures. I think that this is very old and although just a door hinge, it appears to be from a ship or chest so may have some value. Looking forward to hearing your guys' thoughts.

Im only trying to be honest. Unless you can prove its from a shipwreck, the value of that hinge is zero.

But because this is a hobby, and because you found it, you may want to clean it up with electrolysis to better identify it. By the spacing of the holes, I would say a standard door hinge. It looks like some wood remains on one side. For some reason, I also have found them in the beach.

For that very reason most door hinges on wooden ships were brass or bronze.

Any ideas on the white ends? I have no idea what they are or what they're made out of. Also, how do I use electrolysis to clean them up?

I dont know. It looks like corrosion caused by salt and dissimilar metals next to each other or it may even be old paint. It really doesnt look like anything of any value.

You could look in our cleaning/preservation section and search for electrolysis.
