any ideas?

I have seen a similar marked discoidal-like stone from a Pawnee Site in Butler Co. Nebraska. I am assuming it is a game stone.

As far as being a "fossilized sea urchin" ...I totally disagree.

I agree, its not a sea urchin, we find sea urchins here in Texas and they don't look like that. I think it is a game piece also.

Re: don't know what it is but really like it!

hey thanks much
ivan i know that you making a joke
jenny, tommy, and 11 KBP,
i am thinking it could be a large game piece but i neva seen one that big
and yes it is a broke, a heartbeaker, which is why i only photographed one side
it is split and who knows what the back (or front) has for an etching on it maybe nothing, maybe better or who knows?
all i know is i like it a lot

Steve that is one of the most interesting pieces that I have seen in a good while, It is hard to tell from the photo but it look's like it not real thin maybe a bit on the thick side, Approxmately how thick is it ? It made from TRSS or hardstone ? It look's like hardstone This is a interesting piece !!!

Re: don't know what it is but really like it!

Re: don't know what it is but really like it!

OMGOSH.....I love that thing...It looks like a urchin(I know it's not..lol).my fav. fossil...Congrats buddy..

Re: don't know what it is but really like it!

Definitely not a Sea Urchin fossil. It looks to be a Discoidal with what is referred as a Sunburst design on it. Some people also call it a Wagon Wheel design since a lot of times there will be a circle surrouding the lines in the middle.

Here's a link talking about these types of Discoidals, plus a few pictures. The last two pictures are of 3 of my Discoidals I have. The first one has the circle all the way around the outside edge and you can see where they just started putting on the lines to make the Sunburst. The last two are small but both have the Sunburst design on them.
