Re: ? don't know what i got here ?

Your indoor lighting source is from a bad angle creating very bad shadows. Take the pic tommorrow in daylight with a darker background like blue or green and the pics should be better. Use Macro lens no flash.

You've got dark stuff on a white background. I stand by that response.

Re: ? don't know what i got here ?

to me the first one looks kinda like a telegraph key --- you know the part they tap out a message with ---the last one a is part of a spur I think.

Re: ? don't know what i got here ?

I think the first one could well be the thumb piece from an old door latch or something similar. The last isn't a spur. If the holes are different sizes as it appears in the photo, I would think it operated vertically (holes up and down) with a rod going through the larger hole and a smaller top pin through the top hole, allowing it to rotate without falling down the rod. Maybe all three are part of a gate. The piece with the holes might be one part of one hinge of an ornamental gate. They are often designed so that the gate half of the hinge drops over a vertical post.

ah a thumb press type door latch --that sounds good for # 1 and the "ears" that stick out on the side is the "pivot point" of the latch  makes good sense.

I agree. It looks like one half of an old door latch. The other half would have went staight through the door and turned downward to lift on with your fingers to unlatch the door. It has been broken about in half.

Re: ? don't know what i got here ?

also found 2 shovels and a sheet in a hole in the same area. it kinda freaked me out. i'm not sure who would bury 2 shovels with a sheet ? or why would you bury 2 shovels and a sheet in the same hole ???? 187 ? all this is at what appears to be a very old farm house, burnt down. found lots of square nails broken /melted glass and pottery. also have found with me eyeballs only, 5 arrowheads on the same hill. mystery....now 6.... (found another last night may 23)

Re: ? don't know what i got here ?

The piece in the center photo, and marked #4 in the bottom photo is a broken Screw Cockeye off of a harness. Yours is quite a bit older than the ones pictured here, but I think these will give you a good idea as to what it originally looked like.

Here is one that is more in keeping with yours.

If you ever decide to part with it, please let me know.

Thanks

A picture is worth a thousand words. Basically cockeyes were primarily used to attach the harness trace strap to the heel chains which were connected to a singletree.
