Don't judge a book by its cover

Bought at a thrift store for $.80. Looks like it was shellacked and was brass in color. I guess everyone didn't bother to pick it up. Everyone but me!

I guess about .75-1oz.

Dan has posted on here that 11% of the total weight of a weighted candlestick on average is silver. Having stripped a few myself, I would concur. You can just use 10% to be conservative, although the thickness of the silver does vary from brand name to brand name. But, if you use 10% it should be a good guide to whether or not something is a good buy or not. Nice pick, congratulations.

It's 7.75oz total which is how I came up with the silver content using the 10%. This one looks like the silver is thicker hence the up to 1oz extension. It cleaned up nice.

That is a good find. At 80 cents and the markings on the bottom, you knew it was a steal without weighing it. Just meant, once home and able to weigh, by CyberDan's findings, you would know approximately how much silver was in it. If they aren't dented and come in pairs I have sold them on eBay and priced at about twice melt with free shipping and had no problems selling them. Of course, that was when precious metals were climbing and everyone and his brother was hot for silver and gold. I haven't found a pair in good shape for 3 years or so. I hope you took my post as it was intended.
