Re: Don't even know what to call it...

Just found it yesterday, haven't cleaned it or anything yet. Obviously hand made. It has a polished black stone, with blue marbling in it... just trying to see if anyone saw anything like this before. I was thinking necklace, but normally the back wouldn't be so "detailed"...

I am wondering if the stone might be Lapis? If so could be
worth bucks. Jimbob

Re: Don't even know what to call it...

I think it is a Victorian 'mourning' necklace. Weight was not a problem for Victorian women; they wore 10 lbs. of clothes, and probably 5 lbs. was underwear! LOL Very NICE find, Breezie

It think Breezie nailed it. I couldn't find any replica's of the design on the net, but it seems to fit the bill for Edwardian/Victorian "Jet" Mourning jewelry. Maybe a reputable antique dealer can age it for you.

I have been looking on the net since I found it!!! Since it was hand made, I would expect some type of inscription, if it is a mourning necklace. The three that I have seen (from my family through the years from the 1800's) all have a locket type of compartment for a lock of hair or such. I just got back from a jeweler who had no clue and when I mentioned it possibly being a mourners, they balked at the idea, the big store chains are bad, lol... gonna try to find a mom and pop jeweler to see what they think (plus there are several antique stores on my way). Hopefully I will let you all know what they say!!! Thanks for the input!!!

Chiz, Mourning Jewelry was not just limited to hair lockets. Mourning Jewelry included necklaces, earrings, bracelets, stick pins, etc. It was a Victorian practice, and unless you find a Jeweler who is an authority in antique jewelry, they will have no clue. It would be the same thing as going to AutoZone to get information on a '32 Ford coupe! Breezie

Hey Breezie... I understand that completely! Saw all the other ones trying to find something that looked like this!! haha... Just got back from 2 antique places and an antique jewelry shop... What is known is: it is Silver, stone is still a mystery, under a microscope you can see where the bail broke off up top (prolly how it was lost, lol...) one person said it was hand made, the other said it was pressed, the other says molded, sheesh, this is almost fun! Gonna try to hit the library tomorrow to see what I find. I have to say, of the 1000+ things I have found, this is the MOST intriguing piece that I want to find out about!

Re: Don't even know what to call it...

I think the stone is either Jet, Gutta-Percha, or black glass. They were the top 3 stones used in mourning jewelry; listed in order of value. Good luck at the library, and I suggest GOOGLE for more up to date information. :icon_thumleft: Breezie

Re: Don't even know what to call it...

Update....

Well... No luck at the library yet, nothing even resembling it. Even the antique jewlery experts are stumped and want me to tell them what it is, lol... They want me to take it to Freeman's in Phila., we'll see... After being out of the clay for over a week, the stone is a beautiful blue with green marbling, I will post an up-dated pic when I get my camera back!

If they had to guess, they said: Lapis, pewter and leaning toward Edwardian...

Breezie, I mentioned to all of them about possibly a Mourning Necklace, they all nixed that idea, but who knows!

The bathroom remodeling that is going on at my house is taking it's tole on me. Who would have thought sheetrock dust could travel 5 rooms down the hall! Breezie
