Were doll heads ever this tiny and what age could it be? This is yet another item in a relic box that was sent to my husband and it piqued my curiosity. The head is probably 1/4 of an inch around and very smooth, details are not sharp.

not a doll in my opinion, perhaps a small sculpted piece

I meant to note that the head seems solid,no hole at the neck.

CG, this is an antique 'penny doll' known as a Frozen Charlotte. These penny dolls were very popular from the turn of the century to 1920s-30s. The Frozen Charlotte dolls had heads that did not move.

The folk tale goes like this: A young girl disobeyed her Mother when she was told to dress warmly while going out one day during the winter.
As a result, the little girl froze to death. The rhyme on the coffin was:

Fair Charlotte was a frozen corpse
And a word she no more spoke
Her flesh had become like fine china
And just as easily broke

Interesting :)
