According to the National Archives it belonged to Jasper Avery Letterman, Born 1915, enlisted May 17, 1944. He was an Army private and his residence in 1944 was Benton County, MO.

Per Ancestry.com, he died in 1991 (Springfield MO) but he has living relatives. If you want to return the tag to them let me know and I can try to get a point of contact for you. Or, if you have access to Ancestry.com, you can do the same.

Thank you very much Paul for the info! Yes that would be awesome to return it to his family. I have no access the the website, if you would do that I'd appriciate it a lot.

Great. I will contact one of his relatives and try to have them contact you directly.

Paul

That is really cool to do that for their family. Congrats on a great find. HH WH

Great find 250 and good on you Paul for helping...

That is awesome for you to return it. I lost my dog tags in a house fire and wish I still had them.

Awesome find and story. If you get it back to the family...amazing way to reconnect the past with the present.

Here's an obit on his son which mentions his mother, Jasper's wife, her name and city of residence at the time of this obit. She may be the heir to that dog tag. Great find and good luck in your continued search.

For sure an Honorable Mention vote here.
BTW, Letterman was drafted (first number "3" of his service tag) and initially assigned to Jefferson Barracks, in Lenroy, Missouri.
He was born in 1915.
