On July 12, 1973, a fire at the NPRC destroyed approximately 16-18 million Official Military Personnel Files. The affected record collections are described below.
1973 Fire

------------------------------
Twenty-four million men who were born between 13 September 1873 and 12 September 1900 (between the ages of 18 and 45) registered for the draft. A good index for men born between 1872 and 1899 is the WWI draft registration cards. The records for all of the states and territories are collectively known as NARA M1509.

If you're on Ancestry you can check their WWI records and see if there are any matches there, maybe a partial against the service number on that tag.

One avenue I've had luck with is seeking assistance at the local VFW. Those folks are eager to help out and would take an interest in what you've unearthed. Great find!!

I never gave that a thought. I have many friends in VFW. I'll have to reach out to them. THANK YOU.

Well after remembering that that part of Long Island that I found the tag in was close to what was once camp upton. I looked up his name in their archives and found him, Richard A Love assigned to 303rd Division, Stevedore Regiment. Dec 8 1917. Office I find his family I'll post it. Thanks for all the input.

Well here it is a year later and thanks to Tnet. and Angelosangels (Francesca) Richard's tag is going home. Thank you for the post (gxray) made last month with Angelosangels link or a piece of him would have been lost in my basement. His granddaughter is overwhelmed with joy that a piece of her family is coming home.
