Hello all, I've had this object for a couple years, and at first I thought it was a rock with some unusual wear on it. I found it laying maybe 20 feet off a common walking trail, really not sure why I decided to take. At some point I got a digital microscope and now when I look at it, I can see gear wheels, screw heads...far smaller than what I can find tools for. I've sent pictures to various places, usually no reply but that's limited to 2-3 picts. Let's see if i can get at least one here...

That facing surface is rounded outward..now the other side seem like distinct shapes put together, but off kilter a bit..

these are closeup of the surface,

Ill end it for now with an odd one, the light from my camera is blue..I have no idea where the red light is coming from, could never duplicate it......

Welcome to T-Net from Arcanslaw.

I only see minerals...

Where you smoking anything 'funny' when you saw the gears and screws?

Unfortunately, all I see is a naturally occurring rock with mineral inclusions. :icon_scratch:

You might want to consider posting it here... Rocks/Gems
These guys and girls will know for sue what you've got there.

Welcome to Tnet from Toronto,
Dave

"Look but once for beauty".

First (and only) glance suggests it being sedimentary in nature.
The area of context you recovered it from was likely river rock dug elsewhere and then put there for the paths purpose.
Otherwise more evidence should exist of river rock in the area from a more natural source.

so I guess the best test would be to break it open?

Looks good the way it is. Breaking it won't improve what drew your interest to it.

What is un natural to our experience , does not mean un natural to nature.
Though un natural can be argued when something is proven to not be nature....Or known to be human made/caused.

My guess is that breaking it would show sharper individual pieces than those smoothed on the exterior.

A conglomerate:
1.
a number of different things or parts that are put or grouped together to form a whole but remain distinct entities.
"the Earth is a specialized conglomerate of organisms"
synonyms: mixture, mix, combination, mingling, commingling, amalgamation, amalgam, union, conjunction, marriage, merging, compound, alloy, fusion, meld, composite, concoction, synthesis, homogenization; More
2.
GEOLOGY
a coarse-grained sedimentary rock composed of rounded fragments (> 2 mm) within a matrix of finer grained material.
"the sediments vary from coarse conglomerate to fine silt and clay"
synonyms: aggregate, agglomerate
"a rocky conglomerate"

If you don't like it as is , hammer away!
I'd save it in an indoor or outdoor collection.
