I suppose it could be, but I tried to pick some off with a toothpick and it doesn't seem to budge. It looks way more pronounced in the photos, as they were done at 600dpi resolution. I may try sticking it in the ultrasonic cleaner for a bit to see if any lifts off.

The strangest thing to me is that it doesn't have a "D" on it. Don't see many of those out here.

Look closely at the word "LIBERTY" .. It doesn't appear to be in a straight line, and on the reverse, the base of the Lincoln Memorial at left side seems to be a bit off.

may have been struck through some foreign material. Lots of stuff gets in the dies like grease, dirt, wire, rags, etc.

Never thought about that possibility! Thanks!

Yeppers, I've got to agree that it looks like a science project gone bad or either some 'scrap-booking lady decided not to use the penny she painted gold. :laughing7: Breezie

Think you're almost on the right track. There does seem to be gold leaf on the coin.

More importantly, look at the motto obverse, along with LIBERTY: these are key areas for many Lincoln cents for doubling. The D in GOD is especially clear to me.
