I think those type nails were ones typically used on slate tile roofs or terra cotta roofing
But it would also make sense for their use in copper elements on a roof, eaves , etc

I believe the star is a makers mark... They made rivets too, which I have some of... somewhere

Edit: I believe they are made by the Plume & Atwood Co., as the writer of the below article mentions having a box from them: http://www.poohbang.com/2011/10/lake-superior-copper-rivets-in-original.html
-I realize these are rivets, not nails, but the same mark on copper hardware is likely not coincidental
