My dad has found a lot of rings over the years. He used to melt some of the gold rings down and make large nugget pendants out of them and give them away as presents. He also made some nice silver ones too.

Have never smelt gold....does it smell? Maybe we can get some tracking dogs to hunt for gold instead of using detectors. :P

Dimeman,

The early Spanish prospectors believed that Dogs were good for this purpose.
They fed them from gold bowls.
Thinking that the dogs would associate gold with food, and they would sniff it out.

The only part of this theory that isn't documented is whether or not it worked.
