Does anyone recognize this thing?UPDATE-I think I've got it!

This looks familiar to me , but I can't place it. It is from a site producing many late 1700's to early 1800's items. I think it has a hole all the way from stem to bowl. I'm not sure of the composition. Thanks.

The item on the far left is a Lincoln for size. Actually, I'm not sure what the thing with the radiating lines is either :dontknow:

UPDATE - more photos here

It finally hit me this morning why this thing looked so familiar :sign13: The bowl is a perfect match to the bowl on a little gun I found about 100 yards away awhile back. Looking more closely I can see now where the latest piece is broken opposite the barrel side. Noone could id the original one for sure, and now I'm thinking that these little toys? were actually meant to shoot! :dontknow: I think they could be older than what I had previously thought. Now it makes sense why there was a lead shot in the barrel! I included some more pics of the depictions on the original gun to see if anyone has any new ideas on what is represented by the crossed flags, drum, battle axe, and woman? on the stock. Thanks for any input. Below is the link to the post for the original find.

Re: Does anyone recognize this thing?

I am sure that the 'Stem' thing is a pipe base. (smoking)
I had one of these in the '70's
Having the mouth part stuck in the long stem and the bowl (wooden) screwed into the round part.
Is the stem made of aluminum?
It was supposed to cool the smoke and make it a nicer experience .
All I got was a burnt tongue >:(

Re: Does anyone recognize this thing?

It appears to have two attachment points on the edge.

Could the pipe be some kind of handle?

Hi Akiwi, sorry about your tongue :laughing7: It sure is shaped like a pipe but it is awfully small. Look at it's size compared to a Lincoln cent. The hole in the 'bowl' end is crudely made also. It is not threaded on either end. I know you can get into trouble trying to associate depth with age, but it was dug at the same depth as the literally hundreds of old targets that have come from this site. Only a handful of modern things which have all been surface... Thanks

Yea I noticed those marks too, IS.

As for the other thing, I think it is too small for a handle, but I don't know. Thanks for the response.

Wouldn't it be wild if that round thing was a die for making the buttons :dontknow: I don't know what those are supposed to look like.

Yea looking at it was why I left the scatching head because of those two spots. But with the size looking a little larger then a penny and the button being 24mm it was the closes thing I could think of.If it wasn't for that I think you'd have it.But those buttons like that with soldered shanks often come up slick.I've got quite a few that you would never think had a shank.

It would be but I don't think they would have guilted a die just to make buttons don't see how the guilt would stay or be useful like that. :hello:
Come to think of it I've never seen a colonial button die would like to though.
I would think they were made of something hard like iron.So would never hold up in the ground here anyway on the coast cause of the salty conditions. :icon_scratch:

Re: Does anyone recognize this thing?

I initially thought the pipe shaped thing might be a candle snuffer but it's not really that deep and I couldn't find any similar.

Your button looking thing could be a hat pin, which would explain the protrusions on either side. Or just a pin in general.

Opium pipe.

Lucas, thanks for the reply. Does it make any difference that this thing is only one and a quarter inches long? What is confusing me now is that on further cleaning it has what appears to be a bead or something lodged in it part way down the shaft. Whatever it is lodged appears to be smooth, perfectly round, and maybe clear(can't tell for sure). I hate to tear it apart to see before i know what it is.

Re: Does anyone recognize this thing?

Could the pipe looking thing be a "Gas Pipe" for lighting? The sunburst thing could have been a "wax seal" with the handle broken off, or it could have been a part of a wax seal ring, with the band gone.......JMWAG......NGE

I have dug several chinese pipes(there are actually not opium, although they are mis ided as such)exact to the one in the picture Lucas linked, and I do not think your is one.

Re: Does anyone recognize this thing?

This item probably doesn't warrant this much of my attention, but i am still curious :icon_scratch:

After looking at the ball lodged in the stem with a stereomicroscope(a very helpful id tool, by the way)

I'm pretty sure it is a piece of lead shot. It would correspond to about a #1 size(about 4mm

diameter). I thought this info might help someone with an idea. Thanks

Re: Does anyone recognize this thing?

You know my initial reaction when I seen it,struck me as a charger lever for a shot flask, the little nipple on the bottom is what brought that thought I think

Re: Does anyone recognize this thing?UPDATE-I think I've got it!

Just to finalize this topic, I did finally find a similiar picture of one of these guns from a UK detecting site. It was labeled as early 1800's.

Also, interestingly enough, I had most of the rest of the second gun piece in my basement the whole time. And another piece that must be from a third gun that exactly matches the bigger first gun. I guess it pays to keep all the unidentified pieces. See ya.
