Does anyone have the 4" Gold Nugget coil? Your experiences?

I live on Cape Cod Bay and it has a long history, especially with the fishing and former whaling industries. This town use to have 42 piers & wharves back in the day. Today we're down to 3 wharves and the rest are ruins. There's a lot of junk metal in the sand and although I'm a newbie & learning how to discriminate out the iron & steel with my Tracker IV, some of the larger pieces still set the detector off. Another thing - because we're seaside, a lot of tiny copper or bronze sheet metal bits from houses & old boats are coming up from the sand now. I guess there's no way around that. I haven't to date found any gold or silver or even wheaties, but only modern clad (1960 and up), brass, bronze, & copper. Most clad I find within 4 inches deep. Today I dug a little bronze plaque around a foot deep. So I know the machine works, I just want to know how much difference I can expect from a 4" coil, especially where gold & silver are concerned. I'd love to hear your experiences.

Thanks!

I have the four inch coils for/on both my BHs... I love 'em.

I have trouble actually going back to the standard coil because even though theoretically I lose depth, I can pinpoint like a maniac!

Unless it's a false iron signal creeping in when I'm discriminating, the 4" coil allows me to nail the target 95% of the time... the first time.

I don't use them for "gold nugget" hunting... but I do use it for coins/relics. Downside? Yup... takes twice as long to sweep an area with that little bugger if your overlapping your sweeps like I do.

You might sacrifice some depth for the accuracy (I still dig silver coins at 6+ inches), but thats just why I use them. In addition, you can get a lot closer to structures, steal and iron, fences, playground equipment, iron trash, ect... it will pick through trash to reveal good signals. As with any detector or new coil your proficiency will improve with your experience. Truthfully... all my 130(ish) year old relics are almost all between 4" and surface, so I cannot speak to your soil type or your environmental factors.

Try it out... even if only used in certain situations I think you will like it.

Now... I think you asked if the smaller coil will improve your silver/gold to trash ratio... with experience it prolly will... but the coil itself it not designed to sniff out silver and gold better than your larger coil, it only helps to isolate and pinpoint the signals. That alone can mean a higher treasure to trash ratio.

My humble opinion. HH

Thanks Montana Jim! Excellent points to ponder. I already move around like the old man Tim Conway character on the Carol Burnett show, so I can only imagine what I'll look like with the smaller coil! LOL! My problem with the sand is that it gets pushed and pulled around with the storms so an area could be really deep with new clean sand deposits or stripped down to trashy areas. I'm sure more time & practice will help.

I think I've found enough clad now for a new set of batteries, so I'll keep going with the stock coil until I can learn the machine better and and justify the upgrade, but I'm excited to get the new coil soon. :) Thanks again!

Following up... I have never beach/sand hunted with my outfits. I just can't help with that.

And thanks for the visual of Tim Conway... too funny!

Good luck and happy hunting!
