I am not an authority to comment on real or fake, all I know is that if its fake, I like it, and if its real, I like it even more ! Great find.

I would not call it a fake. It was most likely made for the 1960's Centennial of the Civil War. There was a similar design, CS oval with stars but only made in cast brass. The stamping is wrong for an original, the letters are wrong for an original and they just didn't have hooks like that.

HOWEVER, that said, it is a relic (most likely) from the Civil War Centennial 1961-1965. As a young'un I participated in some of the reenactments back then. Still a nice find, and you can proudly box it up with some real minie balls for a nice display. Best guess is an old reenactor used it as a belt buckle and lost it hunting or such.

That IS cool looking man! I looked it up but couldn't find any examples. It certainly has the right looking patina and age to it. If it is a repo, it must be an old one!

That's about as fake as the news there Rob!! Sorry I can't share anything about the plate, not even sure about how the attachments would work :icon_scratch:

Yeah .. sorta looks like box plate hooks..pretty cool fake though. It won't go in my Civil War collection, but will look neat with the other miscellaneous buckles I've dug over the years.
Interestingly enough, most all fakes I have seen have been lead filled, whereas this one is stamped brass. Never seen one like it before.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Yep, it's a fake one. The only one with stars around the CS like that is a cast plate and not stamped. The attachments are definitely not period either. Still a nice find and can imagine the heart stopping moment you had when first dug. Sorry about the bad news on it though.

Thanks .. I've never seen one like it before , so having a unique fake is pretty cool.

I read somewhere recently this guy had a gold coin was told even by experts it was fake found out someway not sure it was real and they only produced a couple of them. so just be sure

Although it appears fake, it's still a cool find! :occasion14:

Regardless, it's a very nice plate that most would have been proud to recover, congratulations

I bet that buckle grabbed your attention when you dug it from the ground! Pretty cool. I’ve never see one like that ever.

Yes, you probably nearly got knocked over when you dug it!

Wow....nice find for sure. I'd have tried every search available to make it period.
Anywhichaway...Congrats on a very cool find.

Nice even if it isn't authentic. Just curious though, did guys make their own if they lost the real one or if they were a wannabe soldier?

Gene Mean, it is well documented Civil War soldiers made plates in the field. I remember about the telling where the Maryland troops made some during the war. Some Confederates also "reworked" Union plates for their use. There never was a CS like this one made in stamped brass, hence a 1960's (probably) reenactor's piece.

Thank you for the kind remarks everybody! :occasion14:
