Hello Golden Sluice, yes I still use my big old cumbersome steel pan when I am tracing pockets. When dealing with fine colors to get a count I have not found anything that works better. I heat it up every few years to blue the steel. TRINITYAU/RAYMILLS

I own a metal pan but never use it. I use a plastic green pan because it's easier for me to see the fine gold. Plus it's a little bit lighter.

Modern pans are far better so had them antiques hydrohoned and pics painted on them and sold to support miners rights at raffles. New keene green, drop bottom garrett or black raised riffle stansport work just mighty fine-John

I couldnt resist getting one from Cabella's it was only 8 bucks or something. I'm afraid of it rusting though. How do you stop that?

..... will a metal pan survive a 60lb boulder being dropped on it?

How do you stop a steel pan from rusting?

Do I still use a metal pan? You bet your sweet bippy I do! They're perfect for doing "Shake & Bake" on black sands.

I cannot find mine, but it must be around here somewhere. I used it a lot in my younger days. For shake and bake on black sands, I prefer a cast iron skillet.

Prospector 70, get your new pan, place it on a burner or put it on a campfire and make it turn blue. This will prevent it from rusting out. Trust me after it has turned blue, you will be able to see your gold easier as well. Cleanup with a metal pan is good too because you can use a magnet and it will stay in one place. As you pan with the magnet in there you can seperate black sand from the gold real easy. A metal pan is good for boiling off water away from your gold/ Consentrates. :icon_thumleft:

I mainly use these as catch pans, when I use them. They are mainly from my collection
and VERY heavy and large.
Dating has been tough on these, but most put them around the 1920s to 1930s.
It's just fun to visualize someone making a "living" with them back in the days.
Put a plastic one near them to show the size.

I have a couple that were my grandparents and the first ones I ever got to use as a wee tot. Every once in a while I get nostalgic and take them out to pay a little homage. The one my partner uses is the same one his grandfather used, and the only one he's ever had. I've tried to get him to try a "new" plastic pan and he won't hear of it. To his credit he is without a doubt a true panning master.

Goldie Hawn - "sweet bippy" - like it was yesterday, lol

I feel that a metal pan still has a place in my backpack.

Would a plastic pan handle a 60 lb. Boulder landing on top of it??
