Dug this near a swamp next to a once Spanish settlement. The pics are rough but it seems to be covered in design. Any thoughts?

UIJ= unidentifiable iron junk. It is a rusted iron or steel spike or other long iron or steel object, any design you see is just rust. We all dig literally tons of rusted out iron which will never be positively identified. Keep hunting and find the real treasure!!

get some electrolysis on this. You may have an old sword but until you can get to the actual metal we may never know.

It's not iron. What you see is clay not rust. There's remnants of very old wood. It's not heavy like iron. It almost seems hollow in certain spots.

In order to identify an item its prudent for the person posting to provide as much information up front as possible...this is not a guessing game...

I was going to "guess" a scabbard - that would be hollow AND lightweight. However, if you believe it's wood, then??!??!??!??

Does it flex or is it rigid? Take a knife to it and verify it's wood. If so, then you're the proud owner of an interesting tree root! ROFL - Copy.gif

Haha I've been slowly brushing and chipping away at it. There's def markings beneath the crust. It's not completely hollow. It is not easily bent. Thank you for your input.

It's not made of wood. When picking, certain spots crumble into a fine powder like compacted wood. It seems like maybe it had a wooden handle.
If it has a signal, its not wood. There seemed to be a misunderstanding. It sure looks like rust. OK You could try testing it with a magnet to see if its ferrous. Any design is not apparent in your photos but if you see a design and you think its worth saving, the next step would be electrolysis.

Probably just the hope of it being something awesome playing tricks on my eyes. Everyone's input was very helpful. Thanks!

It may be something awesome but its just not possible to determine what it is until you clean off the rust. Grab a magnet and test it. If its ferrous, its rusted. If its not ferrous, then I guess its not rust and we take that step when we get there. However clay should be easily washed off so I go with rust.

Grab a magnet and test it.
