Do you md after it rains?

I don't know about detecting in the States, but I will always try to get out detecting after it has rained in the UK. I don't understand all the details, but, it seems detectors (maybe not all) seem to work better in damp soil. I certainly do better after the ground has been wetted . It rained here today so I'm up early tomorrow and heading for a roman/saxon field

Oh, man is it :(

106 today and no relief in sight

I'll pray for gentle rains and a cool breeze for you guys, we're having a cooler than usual summer here, it's a cool 57 F here at the moment

One advantage to going out after it rains is the ground is much softer. It shouldn't be muddy unless you got a bunch of rain. The ground soaks it up pretty good. If you just got some rain then the ground should cut like butter.

Thanks, we could use the prayers

36 days of 100+ and lows in the 86-89, the weatherman said that even 3 to 5 inches of rain would not
help, we need sustained rain.

The ground looks like an earthquake hit with big cracks everywhere. Worst year since 1950 :(

All my plants are dead, and the leave are falling off the trees like it was fall because of the heat and lack of water.

Damn, we had a summer heatwave a few years ago where it reached 102f for a day or 2, I couldn't sleep, plants wilted all that stuff. But not for 36 days, you have my respect and awe for dealing with that my friend, take care :icon_thumright:

If it were to start raining here I'd be out in a minute, problem is it's so hot that any rain just turns into miserable humidity on top of the heat :(

I would love it if it rained here......I would be out in it if it wasn't too bad. :coffee2:

I asked if it was better to detect after a rain a while ago on here- and the general consensus is - it's really good to work damp ground-
of course if your like me last weekends rains my area got about 3 inches -so each time I dug I had water filling the holes in it was like walking on sponge! it was muddy and messy but the wet ground makes of easier detecting, easier cutting of grass, easier plug removal - less chance of killing the grass. :icon_thumright:

I can say I was a dirty boy once day light was shining again... :) I don't think I wasn't muddy any place at the end of the night. mcdonald's drive threw must have loved me pulling up for breakfast n coffee all swampthinged out in the early am...

nothing wrong with dirt - it washes off... :P

They probably thought you were homeless.

Yep, enjoy digging after a rain, ground is softer, and seems to be a little different to detect with all the moisture. I am sure there is some science to it, but I just know it is different.

:icon_thumleft: Yes we do, the rain makes things move up, plus it's easier to dig nice plugs, we won't dig if it is dry, too much damage can be done, plus it's a pain to dig dry ground! :icon_thumright: Red

It's probably like how a TV or Radio signal travels better on drizzly or rainy days than when the humidity is way down. The signal sent out by the detector travels further and easier in moist soil.

BTW, I always try my best to be out the Morning after a rain.

Wet soils conduct electrical signals better. Just like salt water conduct electricity better than fresh water. More ions go into solution, which makes a metallic object appear "bigger" than in actually is. If you want to find deeper objects, wait until there is a heavy freeze with lots of water, then wait until the ground just starts to thaw.
