I always ask, and I typically buy Silver coins for about 18 times face (Silver Melt is about 23 times face). You can check the going melt at Coinflation.com.
Always good to get silver for under melt. I have a big jar put away (and my kids know what it is and what it is worth). Over the last 2 weeks I got 10 silver Dollars and about $10 of other face value coins, A Solid Silver Casino Token, a .999 troy ounce medal for Christmas 1978, and so on. Personally, I like to sit on Silver and gold coins when I can find them.
