I love the Far Side comics!
They are the best. One of my favorites is the night time drive by featuring the cats in the car driving by the bullet riddled dog house. Great stuff.

the cartoon was fun, but the OP's question is unanswered: how to deal with tall grass
as an idle engineer I have forever wanted to combine a PI detector with a weedeater,
many obvious problems

went on a (always ill advised) treasure hunt which evolved into a grueling 10 hour hike up a flowing river over 1' broken rocks, get to the spot which has 2' grass and I explained that it had to be cut
the 5 guys were going to leave until I coerced them to use their machetes, nothing there of course
cutting grass with a machete is a pain in the back

fire is nice with dry grass, but hardly discreet

I hunt in tall grass all the time. The deer and pheasants love to hide in there ! But no, not with a detector.

I hunt tall grass , poison ivy and the briar patch too , when the easy stuff is gone you gotta dive in. I've dug some nice relics in those less than nice environments

If i know the area is tall grass i some times take a bladed weed wacker. With it i can clear a nice size area in no time

I did that once - about 30 years ago, and I will never do it again. Eyes blinded with sweat swinging that tool through the tall grass, I hit a box turtle and cut it in half. I was sick with guilt and could not enjoy the hunt. Never again.

whack a nice rock and fracture the blade, your foot is at risk

I did that once at a permission house that was scheduled for demo. The grass hadn't been cut for over a year and it was impossible to swing the coil. I was about ready to leave then saw a 3' x 4' sheet of plywood leaning against the porch so I ended up using that to flatten 3'x4' sections of grass and then swing the coil over the plywood. It worked great and I ended up finding a couple of Merc's.

I have been trimming under my horse fences for 40 years, Clearing horse trails all over Ohio and Michigan and Pa I have never hit a turtle nor busted a blade on a rock . I guess i am just not that UNLUCKY !!!
