Dman had a doctors appointment this morning so we decided to listen to the weatherman who said we could get several hours of hunting in at a CSA Cavalry camp before the rain started later this afternoon. After only 2.5 hours, the rain started and was just heavy enough to make for miserable hunting. We did the next best thing and went to lunch. I had to buy lunch (Attn. Hill Billy) since I dug the last eagle button.
When we arrived, Doug said "What do you recommend?" like I was a guru or something-LOL. I suggested that he take his Minelab SE and search the trashy area where I dug the Eagle "I" button last week as there should be a few more bullets and maybe some buttons hiding in the iron. The first signal he dug was the very nice little cuff button with circles on it in the first pic with a good shank. In just a few minutes, he had dug the coat size flat button with gilding on the back. He also dug the 3 ring .58 and .69 cal. "Big Boy".
My first signal was the .69 cal. musket ball. The next bullet was the .56 cal. Burnaside Carbine bullet with part of the brass cartridge still attached. The corrosive black powder is not kind to the cartridge or the bullet. Just as the rain began, I dug the .36 cal. Colt conical bullet.
You may say "Why the fuss over some flat buttons?". This is a very early CS camp where the Confederate issued government buttons were not available and the CS Soldiers camped there had only what they brought from home which was the flat buttons and maybe a rare pre-war state militia button.
A rain shortened hunt with only a few good finds but it is always fun to dig CS relics. Doug called Tenn. Josh and I could hear Josh drooling over the phone and wishing he could have gone with us today-LOL. HH, Quindy.
