Hey Guys Anyone know what the US pistol-shot ring had to do with anything? What pistol? when were they issued and what branch of service awarded them? This is Awesome!!!!

Haven't got anything on the ring itself, but found a little bit about the "Distinguished Pistol Shot" Award itself.

There was a civilian component of this award, administered by the CMP (Civilian Marksman Program)
AWARD ELIGIBILITY: A Distinguished Rifleman Badge or a Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge is awarded to a member of the Army in recognition of a preeminent degree of achievement in target practice firing with the military service rifle or pistol. A member of the Army will be designated as a Distinguished Rifleman or Distinguished Pistol Shot when he/she has earned 30 credit points competing in authorized excellence in competition matches. The complete criteria for earning the distinguished designation is found in AR 350-6.
DATE APPROVED: The Distinguished Rifleman Badge was approved by the Secretary of War in General Order 1 dated 3 January 1887 with the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge being approved in General Order 65 dated 29 April 1903.

Adding History link (Pdf). No mention of any Rings for an award though. http://www.odcmp.com/competitions/distinguished_history.pdf

Judging by the architecture of ring, it looks like it could be a cereal box premium of some sort. Lot's of them were made that way.

AAARGGHHH! Explains why I couldn't find anything on the ring. At least I found out a bit about the actual award it was based on. hehe.

It doesn't have .925 or alike, so I would think it was a general ring awarded. I'll do a little deductive reasoning and see if the historical society can produce any more information. Thanks guys, always great to see replies.

I found a few extensive articles about the distinguished rifleman and pistol shot awards, including the one I linked above, and did a word search for "ring" and not a single mention of one in any of them, both military and civilian. I don't believe this is a sanctioned award.

I just found one of these rings today in an old park. It's smashed flat...I thought it was an old cigar band until I googled the name. This thread is the only luck I've had researching. I realize it's nothing precious, but more interesting than a cigar band. I wish mine was in as good as shape as yours. Did you find any more info out? If so, I'd be interested. Thanks and Best of luck on your hunts. Sorry for the craptastic photos.
