Dishonorable mention

This is a true story of what happened to me on my honeymoon a few years back.

While in Cancun, enjoying my first full day on the beach, I decided to get into a friendly volleyball match. While taking a swing at the ball, I felt my wedding ring fly off. I stopped the game immediately and everybody started looking for it. No luck. I was getting desperate and announced a $100 reward to whomever found it. That got a couple locals interested, along with the lifeguard. He went and retrieved a metal detecting wand, the type they pass over your body when entering events, etc. No luck after about an hour and a half, so I went back to the room to regroup.
I returned a short time later and the lifeguard approached me and said he thinks he found it. He opened his hand and there was my ring! Being a man of my word, I reached for my wallet and pulled out 5 $20 bills. That's when things took a bad turn. He said, no, I want $150! Reluctantly I paid him and went back to my room.
A little while later there was a knock on the door, and there stood the manager of the hotel. He had heard of what had happened and was apologizing for having such a greedy employee. He handed me my $150 back and told me the lifeguard was in big trouble.
Later that day, I saw the lifeguard and gave him $50 of the reward money back. I know I didn't have to, but I thought that was fair. What goes around comes around!

Nice story Paul. Glad you got your ring back....personally I would have told him he got what he desrved and not a penny more....It's a shame that some people behave the way they do when they think they have you by the balls. Maybe your gesture gave him a sense of luck and relief and hopefully he will not do such a stunt again.

You are a much more honorable man than the life guard. Chances are he found it on the first search and was just wanting to stick it to you. After wanting the additional $50 bucks I would have handed him a quarter and said thanks, next time take what was offered.

wow! What a jerk.

Unlike you I wouldn't have given him the $50. I hate people like that. I got into an argument with a bum one time about the price of a hot dog, and I had just bought 2 of then, was holding them in my hand! He wanted $2, and I told him $1 was enough for one. Stupid prick.

People are amazing these days with their lack of respect and infurious greed.
