This is a true story of what happened to me on my honeymoon a few years back.
While in Cancun, enjoying my first full day on the beach, I decided to get into a friendly volleyball match. While taking a swing at the ball, I felt my wedding ring fly off. I stopped the game immediately and everybody started looking for it. No luck. I was getting desperate and announced a $100 reward to whomever found it. That got a couple locals interested, along with the lifeguard. He went and retrieved a metal detecting wand, the type they pass over your body when entering events, etc. No luck after about an hour and a half, so I went back to the room to regroup.
I returned a short time later and the lifeguard approached me and said he thinks he found it. He opened his hand and there was my ring! Being a man of my word, I reached for my wallet and pulled out 5 $20 bills. That's when things took a bad turn. He said, no, I want $150! Reluctantly I paid him and went back to my room.
A little while later there was a knock on the door, and there stood the manager of the hotel. He had heard of what had happened and was apologizing for having such a greedy employee. He handed me my $150 back and told me the lifeguard was in big trouble.
Later that day, I saw the lifeguard and gave him $50 of the reward money back. I know I didn't have to, but I thought that was fair. What goes around comes around!
