Bought a Discovery 2 box on eBay, looks brand new and came with user manual. I have 2 questions:
1) how do you find out the manufacturing date of this unit? (Nothing printed on it)

2) I have air tested it and on something the size of a 5 gallon it could only see it at a couple feet and it picked up vehicles in the driveway a little farther. These machines advertise around 18 foot depths. Just curious on what you guys think about these machines.

The 5 Gal can should pick up further than 6'. The vehicles over 12' The critical point in the setup of a 2 Box is the perpendicularity of the 2 antennas. They have to be 90 degrees or you loose distance rapidly. That's why I said to get a Hays 2 Box. The transmitter and receiver are in separate boxes. The attachment hardware at the transmitter end of the pole is the 90 degree adjustment. Good luck, frank... hand print-2_edited-5.webp

I looked all over for a hays and could never find one, the discovery came available so I grabbed it.

The Discovery is a good detector and should go further than the depths that I stated. Your problem is probably lack of experience. I had to play with the controls for a couple of days before I could get it to pick up a car at 12' . Don't pay any attention to that other poster. I have found caches at 6+' that were smaller than a bread box and I have found caches in stone walls from over 6' away from the side. These are actual experience. I have not used a Discovery but fellow cache hunters only have good things to say about it. The tricky point is the null point. That is the balance point between the two antennas on the Hays. It is a mechanical setting in that the actual mounting hardware that mounts the receiver to the shaft gives you the proper angle.
Perhaps your antennas are out of line . The space between the antennas and the 90 degree offset are what gives you the depth. Work with it! good luck, Frank.
