Detector(s) used
Discovery 1100
Just got me a Discovery 1100 brand new at a low price, only missing the battery cover. Anyway I ordered the cover from Bounty Hunter Site. I'm asking if anyone has ever used this model and how does it work? Was it a good idea in gettig it for $70.00. I heard that they are discontinued, if so why does radio shack still has it at $129.00?

Thank You

Hi Bandit,

My first detector was a 1100 about 6 years ago. I used it at the ocean beaches in Oregon and it did pretty well there on the dry sand. I used it for about 2 years and then upgraded to quite a few different detectors over the years. It was good enough to keep me intereted in the hobby finding clad and jewelry 4-5" deep. For $70 you should have no trouble getting your money back in clad.

One thing I might advise thou, get yourself a handheld pinpointer. The 1100 doesn't have a pinpointing feature for finding the exact location of the target below the coil. But with a little practice you can get within a couple inches of it and use a handhelp PP. Let us know how you are making out with it.

I have the Radio Shack Discovery 1000. It has the meter and a 7 inch coil. For coins I run it on tone. Reads on flip tops and nickels. I have purchased the 4 inch coil. I have found plenty of money with it including silver and rings. It comes with automatic ground balance. I have used it in all kinds of soil, including fresh water sand and in the water up to the control panel. Also used it in the Puget Sound up in Washington. Easy to use.
I have also a White's Prinz II. I don't like the touch pads. Too much jumping around. The Radio Shack is a Bounty Tracker IV.

My first detector last October was an 1100. I hunted with it for about two months straight and really got to know it. To answer your first question about the price.......there was a time when they were selling really cheap on Ebay (I got mine there), about $50. Now, you don't really see that many and the ones you do are about $100. Radio Shack sells them for the price you mention and Kellyco sells the in disguise Titan 1000 XD, they say extra deep, I'd say extra dinero, for $199. So you made off regardless. I posted a review of this detector in this section of the forum if you'd like to reference it. It's a good detector in my opinion, for the price, it does a great job of scooping up clad up to about 3 inches, sometimes a bit more. While I had mine, I found tons of clad and two silver mercury dimes. The only drawback and negative to this detector is that once people start using, almost immediately they will want to upgrade to something that will get more depth and have a few more features. Again, good detector. I was more than happy with mine, so much so, that the other day I purchased a Discovery 2200. The 1100 left a good impression as far as quality and price, and the 2200 although I have not tried it out on the field, is already showing me promise in air tests.

We just bought a Discovery 1100 from Ricardo_NY1 for my 8 y/o daughter and got to use it for 40 mins and this is what we found with it. It also works in an area of my property where my Deleon and my Friends XLT won't beacause of electrical interference. We didn't dig one piece of junk just the 7 pennies, 1 wheat, 1 canadian quarter and one aluminum pool token!!! I think the machine is pretty good if you ask me.
