I discovered this site with a mixture of a hunch & google earth. 2 Fields away on a neighbouring farm we found the odd scrappy & fibula but no settlement signs. I felt we were close to something so I checked google earth, the best nearby 'hit' was a dark patch of soil, no crop-marks on the timelines. Cru'Dad did his archie research & found a hit on one of the 2 fields I liked. They had not clue what the crop-marks they had sourced were & covered all the bases, might be pre-historic,Roman, or Medieval!
Dad went off & got the permission, & sometimes timing is everything. They have had relatives detect their farm with nothing to show, & they had the Archies do a dig recently with nothing to show, so when Dad turned up, they just thought, off you go, you won't find anything. I think after our first 20 minutes we had coins, & the old boy was in shock (He was in a tractor nearby), then Dad just adds a bit of Treasure to the mix.:laughing7:
The whole time I was quietly confident because we have had quite a few knock backs this year with good intel & no finds, so I didn't want to get too excited.
It's hard to add a new site every year, but this is now our second. (Although the other was more of an annex)

7 Hours for me & 6 for Cru'Dad;

39 Bronze Roman Coins1 debased Roman Silver - Gordian III
Roman Pot Shards
Roman Running Hare Brooch
Roman Silver Ring; Can't find a parallel to this type on the PAS, & I've not seen this rather plain 3 faced type before. As Treasure, it will be off the the British Museum.

This is how we do it.

Yes, we need to return in better conditions, & grid it in the opposite direction.

Great detective work-congrats on finding the new site

Crazy awesome hunt! Congratulations on the site discovery. What is the item in the second photo, second row far right? Lead or bronze?

We never worry about who has been before us, only about what they left behind.

Crusader, just a nosy question:

Is it true that these follis type coins on pic. 3 come in on the Deus at 8khz with 53-56 VDI?

What a cool job you have. I was an contract archaeologist for 30 years and did not ever find things as great as that. Cheers and i hope you find more.

You have all the luck on your hands this year! Great to find another new site!

You have some of the best sites, great work and nice finds!!

Question for you, and don't take this the wrong way, but why does the British Museum consider a silver ring treasure?

HH,
Cal

The details on the research to find the site are excellent and inspiring. Great finds, of course, but the ancient ring is especially beautiful! Once again, congrats to you, and thanks much for continuing to post your treasures. Cheers mate! :occasion14:

My Deus is always on 12khz. Some come in at that but most are in the 60-70s range.

It's not the British Museum, but the Treasure Act (the Law) that states its treasure - over 300 years old with 10% or more silver or gold content.

I know I detect a lot but its not my job, just my hobby.

But I know what you mean, as I help on lots of Archy digs & they never find very much until I turn up.:laughing7:
