digging parks in a drought

I've been hunting the woods. I know if I dig in the grass parks this will be my last season digging there. some of your older parks might have been alot larger back then. now there's woods where there once was grass

plus kids always run in the woods to pee or hide or cut thru
make out etc - I have always done good in woods near parks or school yards
can be a little trashy though too
when I used to hunt land more - we would stop when there was bad drought
unless you bring a water can with you - used to know a few that would bring water
and even grass seed
I would head to beach and eventually into the water to hunt

Glad you brought it up Mark. I'm trying to stay within coin/junk popper depth. Top 3 inches so I don't cut any plugs. It is a drought by local standards, I'd say. Put away the Lesches, get out your screwdrivers, awls and lock blades. Was out with Scot last week in my nearby park and there were a lot of dug spots that were now dead spots.

We did dig a few plugs, but only in the remaining well shaded, moist ground nearby. Over at another park where the last deep plugs I cut were about 4 weeks ago, three of them are clearly visible still. The good thing is if you only focus on those shallow, easily retrieved targets they come out quickly and can sometimes really increase your bling count.

All the water out there is shallow enough for some muddy adventures in coil swinging too so there's lots of potential outside of the turf deepies these days.

i think i may be the obsessed one but i will go to my local spot i may hunt for a couple hours and only dig 6 or 8 holes i do not dig all the shallow targets as i think they do more damage than the deep one just my 2 cents for what it is worth sorry dennis

The last park I dug at, Mark you know where, I'm sure you would be able see a couple spots in the grass where the sun is now since it's so dry. I don't like doing parks at this time of the year with it being so dry. I'll wait it out for the fall. I will stick to doing some demo houses where I don't worry about what it looks like, just as long as I fill the hole in I'm good. Going to a demo in about an hour. To bad it's from the 50"s. Got 3 more lined up for the month of July.

My advise try to stay away from open areas during these dry times. If you need your fix do the areas where dirt is and not grass or the wood chips.

Thanks for this thread. I don't get out much in town, but I hadn't thought about grass damage in the summer months.
It's good to learn something new.

thats the last public park i was at too bob. if we don't get rain tonight i'll be at the woodchips looking for milk money.

The signals are bouncing all over and the depth sucks. We need rain!!!!

Hey Fred - I was having the same issue tonight. I kept trying the ground balance and cleaned the dust out from under the coil cover but it was still acting crazy. We need to do a rain dance.

Hard, dry ground, md'ers best friend. It's more compact than water-swollen sod. Gets you closer to the goodies. As long as it's in a dirt matrix to begin with and you're not tearing up turf, now's the best time to find the otherwise deepest goodies. Gravel lots, lookout, get the pick out. Long stout screwdriver to chisel chunks.

Creeks are shallow! Pond edges too! Opportunities everywhere!

Your pal, Mr. Freakin' PMA!

Mr. Freakin' PMA! what do you wear on your feet while in shallow creeks to avoid getting cut by broken glass or rusty metal? il. waterways aren't subject to rules like in wis. are they? in dnr waters?

Still got large scabs from last outing. Part of the joy is in the pain, ya know?!? I only hunt waterways in my backyard between the open sewer lines and old sludge pit. DNR? A red wristband the nurses on the floor were so greatful I ordered placed on someone once...
