Did you see the New W&E

I recieved my latest issue of W&E yesterday. In the ask MARK PARKER section was an item, it turned out it is an $1 gold coin. It was also from an old private mint in the South. There is only a rubbing of the coin. They did not mention if it was found with a metal detector. Thought others would like to look up article also. That section is a great spot to send pictures of mystery finds.

Yes Free, Mark does have a great column-always finding info. that's useful. Problem is when I find something while detecting or otherwise, I go crazy going back through old issues(talking 7 yr.+) trying to find what he wrote. Have been told I'm nuts to MD, but it beats going to Vegas cause W/this hobby I jnow that I'll bring back more than I left with. ;) HH!

I liked the bit about the old-timer who cashed in his pennies. Over a million. Would have bought a lot more if he had done so when he was a kid I'm sure! But then again it said it was a lifetime worth of rolling them up.

I'm Still waiting for my issue. it's always, almost always Late. Last time, sombody elses came with mine, they were stuck together by the Plastic. I returned it to the Post Office for Forwarding. I hope if this ever happens to mine, they would give me the same consideration? :) W&E dosn't replace lost issues, they just extend your subscription, making it necessary to pay a Premium to get a lost issue.

Free2Dtect, I've noticed the "new looking" coins in several issues that they have talked about and wondered the same thing. How in the world are these coins found after 100 years in the earth to be in near perfect condition with barely even a rubbing on them? ???
You think they're for real?

Re: Did you see the New W&E

Gold is not a highly reactive element so if nothing has been done to it, most of the time it'll still look really good. The gold rings that I have found (only a couple, but they were nice) looked as good as the one on my finger. I teach science and this line in the book says - Gold is valued not only because it is rare but because it does not react easily in air or water. You may already know this but if not maybe it'll give you some useful imformation.

I'v found Early Wheat Cents, Pre 1920, in mud that come out the same color as a 2005 Memorial. only no luster. It all depends on if oxygen got to them sinse they were lost.
