Just a fun story for you all here.....
A few years ago, I was hooked on Bob Brewers book. To this day, it is still my favorite treasure story, and by now Ive read hundreds.
So, when I moved out to AZ, I had an opportunity to put some of what he presented to the "test." Meaning: I would take my lack of treasure hunting knowledge and see if I could verify some of the things he wrote about, hopefully learning something in the process. As an engineer, "reverse engineering" is how I learn a lot of things. Anyhow, I did verify some things, and other I didn't, but mostly "didn't" due to my own lack of knowledge.
Moving on: Bob talked about Buzzards Roost quite a bit and I have been there more than a few times. One time, I decided to fly my drone around Buzzards Roost (which is OUTSIDE of the Air Forces no-fly zone around the Sups so, I figured it was alright) to see if that giant star is manmade or just a cool natural occurance. Side note, not 1 local dutch-hunter has taken that star seriously that I know of. Ive shown it to a few and they all say "natural." Maybe they're right......?
Anyway.....
I drove out past Elephant Butte, got within flying distance of the Roost and set up. I flew this thing about 1 minute across the desert towards Buzzard's Roost and then the screen just went black and I had no more control over my drone. I didn't crash it. It was too high up. There was also an "auto return" feature where, if the drone flew out too far or reached a critical battery level, it would fly back to where it took off, automatically. So, when the screen went black, I shit myself first because this was a $2500 drone, but then I waited 30 min to see if it would come back. It didn't. To those who say "you crashed it:" maybe. However, I HAD crashed this before into some Palo Verde and when you crash a drone, the camera doesn't shut off. You can SEE the crash happen on screen. Even if you were to crash hard enough to break the camera, you would still see an initial "jolt." This just went black.
So......after the drone didn't come back I made a plan to return the next day and find it. The drone sent my phone it's gps coordinates so, I knew exactly where the drone lost contact and exactly where it would be if it had fallen.
Needless to say, I didn't fly the drone over trails. I flew it over desert. With my bushwacking gear on, I drove out as far as I could, parked up, and started hiking.
I eventually got there and guess what. No drone. No pieces of a crashed drone. No nothing. I believe I didn't crash this drone. Again, you can SEE crashes happen on screen. This just went black and I lost control.
Somebody remotely(?) stole my drone...........and it happened while I was 'investigating' a claimed KGC spot near (not in) a no-fly zone. So.....who was it? Lol
Pic enclosed is the spot the drone went "down." Buzzards Roost is in the back and I am facing west in the pic, high up the side of a mountain looking for a drone or its pieces.
Anyway........ I hope you enjoyed the story.

Interesting story. Try contacting Air Force public affairs to get their take on it. I think it must be laying out there in the desert somewhere.

I have quite a few drones myself. A couple of times while flying my drones I have had birds attack mine. I once had an eagle knock one out of the air :( I am sure it hurt the eagle. I was watching it come back to me when out of know where this eagle came and hit it. Let me tell you watching a over 2,000 dollar fall out of the sky is a SICKENING sight :( I also heard some months later someone found a dead eagle. Close to where this happened. Another time I was flying one of mine over a buck deer I was maybe 20 or so yards and the deer was starting to run off. WHEN all of a sudden the drone just crashed. Lucky for me the drone landed in a large bush. There was just 2 broken props and some blood on it. Looking around the scene I found a freshly cut up small bird. I never seen that bird till after the crash. The drone just like turned on it's side and went down. I was standing in my bard yard lot flying it.

The superstitions has many legends, one of which is: Tuar-Tums "Little People", who live below the mountains in caves and tunnels. Some Apaches believed that the entrance to hell was located in the mountains.

Could be they stole your drone.

Cuzim Does your drone stop sending locations when it is out of range ? Mine do not. So could it have went out of signal range and continued on ?

hmmm, i fly, so, that is a strange one. i never lost one i did not recover.

It has (had) an auto return feature in this case. It, at some point, would have recognized its location vs battery level and returned to the controller (or lift-off gps) automatically. It was a Mavic II if interested. You can see its features online.
I waited more than necessary for it to come back. It is a real bummer. Everytime Im oit that way I always make little detours to new areas to see if I can find it......

Do they fly?

i understand but it is electronic and anything could. perhaps the main lipo connector failed.

Something in the nearby restricted airspace that emitted a signal to jam yours? I don't know the area personally but if the space is restricted by military, I would guess that could lead it to flying off uncontrolled.

That has crossed my mind....

Here is something else i have had happen to 2 of my drones. Both drones had blood on them. One had blood and a couple feathers on it. I was flying it over some deer. I was in my pasture and it was maybe 20 to 30 above the ground. It was a DJI Phantom 3 pro/ I was mayb e 100 yards from it . All of a sudden it turned sideways and crashed into a BUSH :) DOING NO DAMAGE to the drone just a broken propeller , And some bits of a feather and blood. I wen t down to get it and there was dead bird laying there. On e time i was tryin g to get a picture of a eagles nest and one came after the drone I got the heck out of there in HURRY

I had a similar incident a few years back with a DJI 4 down in the SLV.It was new had 2 flights previously no problems. It was fully charged launched it off a couple minutes later low battery came on hit the return button. It returned to where it was launched from, it hovered went to land stopped in mid air and just took of lost all communication and video and tracking it was gone.My girlfriend at the time looked at me and said wow that was a quick 2500.00. It was insured and it took 6 months to find it had went down 3/4mile away in some rocks and was real hard to see found it with another drone by accident just got lucky. I returned it to DJI service department they checked it out thoroughly and could not find anything wrong with it I still have it to this day and it has never given any more problem it has-been rebuilt once do to a real bad crash from hitting a tree at full speed..
