I was out today, found a bit for the battery account jar. But, while hunting I had a father and his 2 sons stop by and ask me how I was doing. The older boy seemed a bit more interested. He asked me the question that I'm sure was on all their minds. Namely, HOW does this thing work.
So, I took a few minutes to show them. I located another quarter hit, explaining the mechanics as I went. Then, showed how I narrow down by pinpointing and dug a very clean, deep plug. When I flipped it over there was the clad quarter in the hole, But, it was dark and they didn't see it right away.
Now this is where I did my part. I pointed the coin out in the hole and told the boy this one was his. He picked it up, extremely happy, exclaiming that it was older than him! His father let out a rather loud "BOOM! BABY!!"
I was a bit shocked and quickly called him down for it, his sons were listening to what I said very, very carefully! I said, "American Diggers?" He said yeah. I told him, I DO hope you aren't buying into that show's guff!!!
He said he was just celebrating and I told them oh that's fine! If I find something good I'm just as likely to do my happy dance. But that show is absolutely painting the wrong picture of this hobby. The father said really and I could see him noticing my trash bag. The boys were still paying very close attention. I told him I'd bet they never saw one of those on the show. Then I took them over to my car where I have a collection bag for the trash that I only empty when it gets full. There must've been over 50 lbs of can slaw, tabs, etc. I explained that it was all the trash I dig up and clean from the parks. Again, I told them they wouldn't see that on the show either.
They all said wow!
I think I got my point across.
Sorry for the boring post but I think we all need to do a bit of this type P.R. in the field.
HH everyone!
