I went on a hunt today at a plantation in the Vicksburg campaign area. The house was built in 1830 and has produced some civil war artifacts. I dug this item. It looks like some type of bayonet that would fit on a double barrel shotgun...!? But I have no idea. Can anyone confirm this or tell me what I have dug? I'm attaching photos along with a shotgun bayonet example for stock images. Thanks for any assistance.

While it does share characteristics of one, I'm not 100% sure it is. What type of bayonet or rifle is in the picture you provided?

The opening or sleeve appears to be too wide, not saying there isn't wide barrels, but 2 inches across seems too much. I'm not seeing a mortise cut in the sleeve to allow it to fit around a sight, and no provisions to secure it to a rifle. In all honesty it reminds me of some sort of tool.

I've handled a lot of bayonets, but not every kind out there, so don't take my opinion as the definitive answer just yet.

Thanks guys....I just got a positive I.D. on it....It's a turpentine hack. This is a tool used to extract turpentine from pine trees.
