Last night on the fox news channel, I think it was fox...they showed a guy on the beach looking for whatever as part of the investigation......well it was a short snapshot...but it looked like the guy was using a Bounty Hunter...black box....might have been a Minelab but I don't think so... now we all know the BH's have their place in the MDing world. If I'm a professional evidence collector there are probably 10 or more detectors I would use. Now he may have had a specially made one giving him the benefit of the doubt but it looked like a stock one to me. By the way ..some time ago I wrote to the FBI and every district chief explaining the importance of metal detecting at every crime scene and how those of us who use a detector evry day could be of help in training law enforcement. I did get a nice letter back from a member of the special branch of major crimes saying they would love to have someone in their group. aloha johny mc. www.theadventurelodge.com

here's an example of how tough it can be to find a needle in a haystack- ever cleaned out your detecting bag with all the junk, sand, dirt, and goodies you found. There will be that one miniscule layer of dirt left. AND there will be one mercury dime that you knew you found under it. Always a dime right. They would need 30 or 40 people to uncover evidence on that beach. We can put a man on the moon but....

I'm no expert on it, but i think they only use the VLF/all metal mode in their search of the crime scene. I think Bounty Hunter would be as adequate for that role as any other brand.
I feel where the real performance difference/seperation between brands begins, is in disc.
The detectors discimination depth and ability to seperate and accuratly I D targets in various soil conditions and terrains.
I'm not trying to defend Bounty Hunter. I don't even own one.
It just seems to me, their as suited for that role as any of the others.
As far as helping train officers, i'll leave that to who ever would like to. In my youth, i already did my fair share of training them, in the art of pursuit.

I have a BH tracker 4 and i think it would be ok for finding crime scene evidence...But not if the evidence was the size of a gold chain link.

some good stuff there however....

rv- some excellent thoughts and I was not dissing BH'ers...however I know many detectorists who used a BH, switched to other brands and not one that I know of switched back (oh no here come the replies).....and from my understanding the reason is depth...that being said depth on solid ground shortly after a crime was committed may not be important...but it may: shallow graves, little time to dispose of the body,so someone digs enouigh to get the body under the surface. Welll that nice ring on the finger even at 8-9 inches can make a solid bang. The detectors that cause the most traffic on forums/websites do so because they consistently go deeper and more accurately in the greasest variety of soils. now if I'm hunting a beach where stuff gets deeper quicker I would want a deep seeker.
And most importantly if there is one place that detectors get thrown for a loop so to speak its the beach. We have some of the best beach detectorists in the world hunting the eastern seaboard beaches and I know that most of them are not using BHer's.....minelabs,yes, fisher's yes, white's yes, shadows, yes, garretts yes tesoros yes. The proof is in the pudding.

You are right on the most part, the bounty hunters are mostly begginer level detectors, they do lack depth, and they cant find really really small items, I myself have still found alot of relics and coins with mine and am really satisfied with it, but i occasionally stop and think, "I wonder what i would be finding with a better detector?"

Johny: I agree

My statement wasn't meant to come off as a rebuttal. But i thought it might appear so.
I just couldn't come up with a way to make it sound sweeter.
It was just an observance of mine, beings that many (not all) crime scenes are fresh. And often times is a search for fresh surface shell casings.

RV-didn't take it as a rebuttal. I like the exchange of differing ideas. I learn more, and it really helps me with my business. I like to pry. In this case in relation to Bher's. My next door neighbor came by last Xmas for a detector for her kid. We ended up getting them a BH. I had my hands on it for some time and was impressed with how much they throw into a lower priced unit. My one concern was the durability of the unit though.

SWR- that makes a lot of sense with the Fisher unit for underwater. At first glance last night I thought about Fisher but didn't think they had a black box land detector with the ovalar shape.

Thanks for info Johny Mc.

BHs are actaully really durable, i have beaten mine up a lot and it still works great. They are also a really really lightweight machine, mine weighs only a few pounds. But again they lack depth and cant find really small things....

I have a bh lonestar and an ace 250 and i'm about to send the ace packing. I don't think i've found a dollar in change but i can dig up the junk. i bought it for the depth but i haven't found anything the bh wouldn't find. the bh is alot lighter. what i know know, and had to buy a md i would buy the bh.

Sky diver
-if you are digging junk then you will also be digging, coins, relics, and other good stuff eventually.
Do you discriminate out with your BH. Is that why you are finding the coins with the Bh. Doesn't all add up.
I wouldn't give up on the Garrett yet. There are some good detectorists who say its top notch for the dollar. You might want to check out the Findmall Forum and go to the Garrett Forum. That might help. My experiences with Garrett machines is they are very accurate, meaning the coils pick up well-quickly. I would guess you've had the BH longer. Took me a year to get comfortable with my exploder. I still curse the thing every now and again but its found some stuff that very few detectors would pick up mainly because of mineralization and depth.

LOL!! :D

I have a BH Landranger and it is near top of the line for BH detectors. For the money it has most of the bells and whistles of much more expensive machines, and it is really light weight. I have other detectors also but I don't feel handicapped with my BH and still use it a lot. Some of my better finds have been found with it, and I have recovered coins down to 8". As hard as the groundhas been lately it would take dynamite to dig much deeper anyway! I would venture to guess that more peole get started with a BH detector than any other brand. That's because it is so readily available at many different outlets and not too expensive. I am no great BH fan, however I feel every brand except some of the Chinese stuff (I have first hand knowledge) has its nitch in the detecting field. Would I take my BH prospecting for a gold cache I found out about? Probably not. But on the other hand using a high dollar detector merely for coin shooting would be a waste. Just my very humble opinion. JIM

I saw a couple of the Fox reports and it appeared to me,that it wasn't what detector he was using, but how he was using it.The shots I saw,he had the coil at almost a 45 degree angle! Good?? and moving fast!

Its amazing how someone can hold a metal detector wrong, i mean i dont get it! Wouldnt it make sence to hold it flat and not sideways? I gave my detector to my little brother to try whos 10 years old and he held it right! they really should teach these people how to use one before just handing it to them and telling them to find evidence ::)

Re: Did anybody else catch the segment on the Aruba situation where the guy had

I personally think the bh is a great machine its so simple being a bell tone detector, got the sovereign three days ago its a lot harder to use and a lot heavier havent had time to give a objective report yet, Im going to buy one more machine for cashe hunting that will be the jw fisher pulse, need a rugged pi for cave hunting, I dig all in isolated areas anyway.
Still dont knock bh untill youv used one ;D
