If you go to GeoCommunicator you can query the open and closed claims just south of the city.
There appears to be some likely spots just outside the active boundries. Just be careful when crossing anybodies claim.

There is gold near Diamond Springs but it is all on private property or land locked BLM. However, I still prospect in the area. Do you want to get together for some prospecting?
