Took my DFX out today for the first time today. I'm new to the DFX having used my XLT for the past 2 yrs. Wanted to add another whites to my arsenal. I bought a used DFX on eBay and finally got to get out and try it. I put some programs on it I got off the internet and I have the stock coil. Well it sure seems like a different animal, compared to my XLT. Read a lot about it and have a few books on it. Kinda confused on what frequency or what 2 frequencys to use. Seemed like it didn't work very good, I tried different settings, adjusted pre amp and other settings to smooth it out but didn't seem like it wanted to. Anyone have any suggestions they can give me on my DFX? Thank you!

Sounds like there could be something wrong with the detector. Maybe you should send it in to Whites for a checkup.

Since this detector is new for you, I would suggest trying one of the standard programs instead of a custom.

You can adjust all the settings you want, but if you don't understand what they're doing, it won't help. The DFX is a much more complex unit than the XLT. It works great, but you won't do well with it right out of the box. It has a steep learning curve. I'd strongly suggest you get the book..."Digging Deeper Withe the DFX". It has complete instructions on the tuning, with what the various settings cause the detector to do. If I don't use mine for a year, it takes me two hours to get back my skills.

You never know who had the machine or what its history is when you buy used - especially eBay. I figured that he has books and has some experience with an xlt - he's not a noob.

Wasn't suggesting he was a NOOB. I was suggesting he buy the best book. Could be a bad detector. Maybe not.

Yeah I have jimmy sierras book, read it twice, gonna get a DD 6x10, see if it's better, then if not prob send it in, previous owner only used it twice, looks brand new, I guess I gotta play with it more, Not as easy as XLT! Yet...

In my opinion, Jimmie's book isn't close to Jeff Foster's book when it comes to explaining the DFX. I've got both, and have read both. Digging Deeper is the "bible" on the DFX. I've heard the stock coil is bad, but find it hard to believe....that White's would include a coil that doesn't work well. I got mine near new, with the stock coil and the 6x 10DD and the 4 x6DD...I've never used the stock coil. I really like the DFX, but like I said earlier...if I haven't used it for awhile, it takes me a couple of hours to "get it" again. Hope there's nothing wrong with yours.

I didn't know Jimmie had a book on the DFX. I have Foster's MXT book and he really covers that machine like no other. Definitely get his DFX book.
