DFX Response Question

I just received a DFX after using a Coinmaster and Classic III for 37 years and need some help. I've been using the coin & coin/jewelry programs so far and have been running with and without threshold(trying to get used to that). Anyway, my questions is this: My other machines make a real crisp, clean tone on a good target, but the DFX seems to ramp up to the target volume, sort of a slide up in volume. Is there a setting that will make it respond more quick and crisp? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Doc

Do you have a manual? If not it is available at Whites website to print it from there for free. Do you have Jeff Foster's book "Digging Deeper with the DFX'?(it is a must read for the DFX owner and is approx. $30)

The DFX is capable of a different tone for every VDI on the scale when Tone ID is on. If you don't like the sliding sound you can turn this off but it will only give one sound and you will have to rely more on the VDI #'s and signagraph.

You can adjust recovery speed to help the detector sound off quicker when targets are close too.

Thanks for the response. I have read the manual 3 times and Jimmy Sierra's book a couple times. I may not have explained myself well enough. I guess what I'm trying to do is create a sharp, spitting tone. For comparison, let's try this example: The Classic III responds like a car horn, a quick burst of sound, the DFX sounds like a car engine reving up, a varoom sound. I like the quick slap response. Beep, Beep. Not like Beeeeep, Beeeeep. Sounds crazy when I try to write out sounds.

With tone ID off it will be crisper but only one lower tone sound for all VDI's. Are you getting a sound almost like overlapping tones?? I can get them like that if I am not sweeping very fast with a higher recovery speed at times. The tones on my M6 are crisper and took some getting used to the DFX sounds.

I like the crisp tones. With my Classic, I hardly ever have to use the pinpoint switch because the tone stops and starts quicker as I pass the target, it doesn't bleed around the object is what I'm trying to say I guess. I can tell where the target edges are. I haven't been able to do this with the DFX. But other than this little problem, everything else is awesome.

I know exactly what your saying, you explained fine ! I too thought this exact thing when
I got my DFX a while back. I had experimented with a Tesoro, no Meters machine. It had
excellent crisp audio... but it had to, because thats all you had to determine target quality etc.
Scratchy edges, crisp edges, sputtery etc etc.

With the DFX's digital age audio , I dont think it can be reproduced on the DFX.. However.. I
came to the conclusion that it doesnt "need" to sound like that, because the quick trigger pinpoint
mode (DC no motion) has VCO (if turned on) , and its KILLER perfect for sizing the edges and pinpointing !

So, just as long as the machine lets me know something is there... Im good to go with VCO :)

Oh yeah, it lets me know for sure. And the VCO is killer. About blew my ears off. This thing rocks. I just gotta get used to the new sound.

Got out last evening for a while and did some tweeking with the filters. I found that 2 produced a nice crisp response but 3 seemed to do fine. A much different sound than 4 for sure.

You do have tone ID ON? Are you hearing a different tone for each target? I ask that because with tone id OFF the length of the sound is based on the recovery speed. If you say move the recovery to 10 the sound is LONG. The manual wont give you a percent of knowledge that Jeff's book will. His book is a must read for anyone metal detecting let alone for the DFX.

No, I wasn't using tone ID. I tweeked things today, cut the filters back to 3 and liked the response. Even with tone ID on it was better. Thanks for the replies.
