DFX and Pinpointing (Ratcheting)

Hi all

Well I am a newbie a couple of months into my DFX. Early on I switched ratcheting off in coins program because I found it easier to pinpoint and do the "all metal X marks the spot thing". However, as I have dug more, I am finding that about half the time my coin is in the wall of my hole. I am making still somewhat larger plugs, usually at least 4 or 5 inches but only about half the time will the coin be in the hole.

So I'm thinking that maybe switching back to ratcheting may end up increasing the likelyhood the coin is in the hold. I would appreciate any comments.

Thanks

Ah try VCO instead, it will give a higher tone the closer to the center of the target you get.

I find it easier to use.

Try it. ;D

Thanks for the VCO tip and yes it helped a lot. I am pin pointing right on the spot now. Also using tone ID which is great. This is what I like about the DFX , the ability to turn it on and go but the ability to grow into it and start tinkering with settings.

Thanks again

What also aids in pinpointing, especially shallow targets is to manually ratchet while in the pinpoint mode. Squeeze & release the trigger until the target just barely registers. By squeezing & releasing you "shrink" the target making it appear smaller & weaker to the detector. If you make the target disappear all you have to do is release the trigger & sweep a couple of times. Then you can start the pinpoint procedure all over again.

If you're in an area with numerous shallow coins such as a penny scramble, you can reduce the DC Sens to maybe 15 or so. This also makes pinpointing easier. Even at 15 you can pinpoint targets down to 8" in most cases but of course it'll give you a much weaker signal.

I never liked the ratchet pinpoint feature & keep it turned off all the time.
