I have 2 Deus's One is set up with a 9 inch coil and one i have set up with the 11 inch coil both Stock. I was air testing my machines with the exact same programs. Ran same settings on both. Even tried different freq's Took a 1964 like new Kennedy Half dollar and could hit it at about 12 to 13 inches. When i would put two halves the same year and condition and trtied it i was lucky to hit them at 5 inches. I then took a couple of silver rounds 2011 1 ounce and a 2011 year Half ounce by them selves i might add and both machines would not hit them.
Have any of you experienced this ?

Gary,

You need to be more explicit for the group in both your user settings and a little more description on how you actually conducted the air test.

Discrimination Setting?

Tone Setup (5-tone, Full Tone, etc. plus tone breaks and any notches) Do you have iron wraparound notched out?

Sensitivity?

Tx Power?

Frequency?

Reactivity?

Silencer?

Iron Volume?

Audio Response?

When you are air testing a large mass of high conductive metal such as silver rounds or stacks of halfs, strange things can happen due to overloading and the effect that different frequencies have on depth become more pronounced. So if you are running your test at higher frequencies such as 12 or 18 khz then you may begin to see the frequency effects related to conductivity and depth, namely that the lower frequencies are best used to test high conductive targets especially in bulk.

i would say she got overloaded

If anyone has a 1 ounce or 1/2 ounce silver round just wave it over your coil and let us know please

I wish I had 2- 64 halves to try. I don't think you have a big problem.

It is on my list to try on the Deus and EQX as a test for the sake of detector science but it’s not really a real world problem scenario. I think if you encountered a true deep in-ground silver hoard, your Deus should have no problem ringing it up.

Gare,
I would still like to know what your settings were so I can try this and see what I come up with.

I think the notch might be your issue there bud. Have you tried the test without the notch. That amount of silver could be hitting above 97.

Great Reply Iffy and THANKS !!!

Gare,

Yep, Iffy is on to something there.

Now you know why I asked for your settings and specifically why I asked if you had iron wraparound notched.

You need to get rid of that notch and test again. Some might ask, why doesn't the notch just cancel out the signal altogether?

I don't know how you conducted your air test, Gare, but with a notch you might get different results depending on whether you start with the target near the coil and move it away or start with the target away and move it towards the coil. Different distances may result in down or up averaging of the TID as it is moved away or towards the coil, especially with very small mass targets or very high mass targets. So that would explain why you might hear the target ok at a certain distance away from the coil but the signal nulls out close up or far away as the TID is averaged into the notch.

If you get the same results without the notch then other questions will need to be asked.

BTW - when conducting an air test, its best to be in pitch mode because the pitch tone can really give you a more precise drop off point for any target regardless of its conductivity, whereas with discrete tones you may be subject to the target tone "jumping the tone break" as a result of the up and down averaging effect I previously described.

HTH and hope the mystery is solved...

Vferrari: Have you tried this test yet ?

I am going to be out of town on business this week, will try it when I get back as I have two weeks of November relic hunting bliss to look forward to.

I read this and will air test in a few. My Deus nailed a silver cache about 8" deep and the machine almost blew my ears off. It's with the coil you have now.

A few minutes have passed. I tested mine with a one ounce silver round. Deus Fast, FACTORY settings. 4 tones. At 14.4 khz it read at 14.5 inches. At 74 khz it read at 16 inches.

Use factory settings.

UPDATE !!! Those that said the problem may have been my Notch hit the nail on the head. I upgraded 5.2 and it hit the 1 ounce silver at 99 and the halves at 96 either one or more halves.

Now i would like to THANK EVERYONE for your help and suggestions. THANKS ALL your GREAT !!!!!

BTW Crow tastes better with Mustard on it LOL !!!

I'm not going to upgrade at this stage. Machine works fine with 4.0. It has me broken in relatively nicely. Someone I was digging with last year told me how he took his brand spanking new Minelab to a beach the engineers had dredged Spanish reales onto the beach. It apparently was a feast. He told me everyone else had more than 1. He had none. Someone else came over to see what was going on, and a factory preset had it eliminating the very highest tones, which meant he was passing his coil over 18th century 8 reales and the machine didn't see them. They fixed it and he finally got some!

No notches for me, not relic hunting.

I think my issue was settings not the Software version

I've yet to find anything in the AIR, ground yes. air no.
